Subtext!

Umm, hi, I'm a totally anonymous and independent person with absolutely no biases when it comes to blog engines. I'm a big fan of Subtext and think it's worth checking out.

I use dasBlog on both bloomeryweddings.com/blog and rjdudley.com/blog, and Community Server on both floristblogs.com and golfgladiators.com. For a single blog, I think dasBlog is fantastic. It's easy to set up, easy to use, supports blogger API so nearly every offline editor can be used. One downside, not all that tragic, are that data are stored in XML files, rather than a database. This means you don't need the extra $5-10/month on your hosting plan to use it, but it makes getting to those posts a little tricker. Why you'd want to, I can't imagine, but it sounds like a great XLINQ project. The only piece missing from dasBlog IMHO is a true photo gallery. You can hook in nGallery or something similar, but the integration isn't as snazzy. The FTB editor has a gallery type of thing, which while useful isn't a true flip-through gallery. Google loves content in dasBlog--my blogs get indexed really well and rank highly for some key terms. Skinning is pretty easy, not like you'd know it from my mad 4rt skillz.

Plus, Scott Hanselman is part of the dasBlog team, so you can expect coolness in future versions.

Community Server is a great app, and getting better. I love the integration between blog and photo gallery, especially with Ken Robertson's lightbox module, but it's a hell of a lot of overhead for a personal blog, IMHO. Changing the look is a serious PITA, and documentation is kind of lacking for some features (wiki != docs).

I have tried all of them. Community Server is an impressive product, but overkill for a single personal blog. dasBlog is interesting, but I've had a variety of issues running it on my service provider (disappearing posts on 1.1, full trust requirements on 2.0). The HTML generated by Subtext is too bulky for my tastes, but it's otherwise promising.

Personally I do prefer Wordpress to all of the current .NET offerings, but since I'm paying for .NET hosting, that's out.

There are converters from dasBlog to CS, so it's been done. And the 1.9 release of dasBlog is scheduled to support BlogML, which would also aid in conversion. But that means conversion is all through front-end, and probably not as fast as DB.

Avoid CS if you can as it's (recently) become a spam magnet and it fast becoming bloatware for a personal blog (sorry Rob). I think it's great for a community or intranet portal, but for a single blog there are better choices. The latest version of dasBlog is coming soon and is quite good, but has a few problems because of it's storage mechanism (XML). Subtext is quite good and actively developed so take a look at both. If you don't want/have a database, then dasBlog is the way to go, otherwise I would consider Subtext.
