MSDN Univeral prices - what's the deal?

by Jason Haley 7. March 2004 00:13

It is almost that time of year again - renew my Universal Subscription. For the last 2 years, I have been purchasing my subscription from Microsoft directly. Last year after I paid around $2,000 for my renewal, I spoke with some people who paid less than half what I paid. This year I am wondering if I should buy it from a reseller, here are some of the prices I found this morning:

Why are the prices so different? If I don't buy it from Microsoft, what risk do I have that something will get screwed up with my software shipments? Does Microsoft handle everything after the reseller has sold the subscription?  How many people in the blogging community have purchased their Universal Subscription from someone other than Microsoft?

I have no problem paying the money for the subscription (or the $1,000 or so worth of books a year to learn the stuff), but I could pay for those books with the money I would save by going through a reseller instead of Microsoft...should I?
