Replacing old laptop

I ordered a new laptop today to replace the dead laptop (8 months before I was planning to)

Getting an Inspiron XPS, P4 3.4GHz, 15.4in WUXGA, 1GB Dual Channel DDR SDRAM at 400MHz, 128MB DDR ATI's Mobility Radeon 9700 AGP 8x Graphics, 80GB Hard drive, 8x CD/DVD burner with double layer write capability, with an extra 16-cell battery...  this one better last me 3 years.

At least twice the machine for the same amount I paid for the old laptop 2 1/2 years ago (new one weighs about 2 times the amount too).

Sorry to hear about your troubles this past weekend.

I don't know about the new Dell Inspirons, but my "old laptop" that still runs is a Dell Inspiron 7000. It cost me almost 3 times the amount as my current laptop, has a broken monitor hinge (but the monitor still works!), a fourth of the memory of the new laptop, but it keeps on ticking and has helped me in a pinch. If their quality is still top notch, the new Dell should last awhile!

I just got the same inspiron machine you've got minus the dual-layer writer, mine is single-layer only. It's a very nice system, battery time is terrible but I didn't buy it as a truely mobile station so it's not a big deal to me. I bought an extra power supply to leave at home because the power supply is absolutely HUGE. I love the widescreen for doing dev work - I'll never go back to 4:3.
