.Net monthly research topic - August is Resource Files month

In trying to get a little focus, I have decided to try focusing on one topic a month (as opposed to just asp.net, c#, xml or the like).  I figure one month of researching a specific topic it should give me enough time to come up with 3 or 4 useful examples (probably in a mix of vb.net, c# and c++) as well as be enough time to aggregate a good listing of tools and resources that are related to the specific topic - sort of like a term project or something.

For the month of August, I am going to be researching resource files.  My goal is to learn all aspects of resource files, what you can do with them and why you care, create some useful code libraries to use when working with them, a review of tools that you can use to edit them and an aggregated listing of resources that deal with resource files in .net.  Let the research begin...

i like the concept ... because i have the problem of staying focused. i've considered even letting people vote on what i should work on next ... would you take it that far?

Casey: I actually thought about doing that. This month I already have something I am looking into, but come next month and I don't have something I already want to focus on, I was planning on asking the masses.

The only problem I see with me asking people to vote on what the monthly topic for me is that the 5 or 6 (ok maybe around 200) people that actually read my blog might not suggest anything..

maybe start with a long running poll. basically you could supply some of the topics to begin with, and others could vote for priority. work on the highest priority one each month, and drop it off. eventually let people add their own topics as interest builds. i would love to see what topics people want more info about, or that have been glossed over by others

Don't cater to the crowd. In trying to please others, you're selling the individuality that is your blog. Pick topics you like to learn or need to learn. Otherwise you'll get blogger burnout.

Casey: sounds like an interesting way to drive focus, not sure if it would work but I am open to suggestions.

Darrell: I agree about not catering to the crowd.

I think the most important thing is to just have a topic to focus on (so many things to focus on with .net), however it gets picked. I really don't think I could do research in my own time on something I am not interested in or write sample code (for fun) in a language I don't want to write in.
