How to pass 70-300

I started off studying for the 70-300 Analyzing Requirements and Defining Microsoft .NET Solution Architectures exam, just like I did with all the other exams.  Here is a overview of what I did and some of what I should have done different to pass it on the first try.

1.  Bought the MCSD .NET Solution Architectures Exam Cram 2 and the MCSD Self-Paced Training Kit: Analyzing Requirements and Defining Microsoft .NET Solution Architectures

2.  Read both of the books from cover-to-cover

3.  Loaded up the exams on the CD's that come with both of the books (WARNING: all questions where multiple choice on these - the exam is all case studies)

4.  Once I thought I was ready (used my judgment from taking previous exams) I scheduled the exam

5.  Saved the case studies in the back of the Exam Cram book for last - took them and did not do so well (should have been a warning sign)

6.  Took the exam and scored something like 560 --> Passing incase you don't know is 700

7.  Went to local Irish pub to forget about the failed exam

After some long thinking about the exam, I came to the conclusion that I knew the material but I really sucked at taking the test - so I better learn to take case study exams.  In order to prepare to take the exam again I came up with a 2 week plan: spend 1 week reading some supplemental material to get to know the material better and 1 week to improve my test taking skills.

The exam cram book has a lot of resources listed in it for additional reading, so I started reading articles about ORM, MSF and since I didn't want to feel like all I was doing was the exam, I finished up Microsoft ASP.NET Coding Strategies with the Microsoft ASP.NET Team - which turned out to be pretty good supplemental material for ASP.Net questions.  The more reading I did the more I was convinced that I already knew the material.  So now learn to take the test...

How do you learn to take a Case Study exam?  Practice, Practice, Practice!  It is just like the other exams, you have to get to the point where you know which choices are not correct (and you can explain why), know which items are included in what you are supposed to be designing and know which items are included in the case study - but you don't need to do anything with (ie:  if you are enhancing the system you don't need to rebuild it from the start).  So you need practice tests to learn, the more the better and more comfortable you will be taking the exam.

My advice on how to learn to take the 70-300 and how to tell if you are ready:

1.  Complete numbers 1 - 5 above

2.  If you score over 90% of the questions right in the Exam Cram case studies - sign up and take the test (your smarter than I am)

3.  If you don't score over 90% on the case study questions in Exam Cram, but know you know the stuff and only need to learn to take case study exams - buy the Transcender (see note below)

4.  Once you are passing all the practice exams on the transcender and can deduce right and wrong answers (like mentioned above) - you are ready.

On my first pass through the transcender exams I scored something like: 754, 710, 600 (all not passing by transcender's scale - 850 to pass).  On the second pass is when everything clicked.  I could explain which ones where right and which ones where not and score above 900 on all the exams the second time through.

STRATEGY YOU CAN USE ON THE EXAM: While taking the exam, flip through all the case study reading you have (give you an idea of the time you will need to read), then go straight to the questions to see what the hard ones are, jot down some notes (ie. need an relation model of how Book, Author, Publisher, Customer are related in case study or need to know the steps in the process to upload a text file into a database), then go back and read the case study (now that you know what you will be asked about later), take good notes and the take the questions.  One word of caution though: keep your eye on the clock so you don't run out of time.  This strategy worked well for me on the exam.  Also consider the time of the exam.  My first on was at 11am, with breakfast only, my mental stamina for case studies didn't go over so well.  My second exam I scheduled for 9am, I had a good breakfast, got there an hour early to review the MS press book (had a Zone bar while doing this and some water), then ate a banana (simple sugars = good for you) and took the exam.  I was much more alert this time around.

With the transcender and the strategy I came up with, my score went from 560 to 800, so it does work (or did for me anyways).

Note on Transcender:  I hadn't bought any transcenders until I failed this exam because I heard they where basically the exam and I wanted to know that I passed because I knew the material not because I had seen the answers first.  If you too think this, then think again.  The transcender practice exams where practice.  The style of the practice exams are really close to the real exam BUT THEY ARE NOT THE EXAM (the case studies are not the same and the questions are not the same) - just great practice and a great way to determine if you can pass the exam.  The transcender comes with 3 exams (9 case studies in total).  The Transcender is $139 - more than the exam, but take it from me: it is better to pay $139 + $125, than to pay $125 (exam), $139 (transcender) + $125 (exam)

Excellent post. I am registering for the exam today to be taken in a month.
I have sleepwalked through the mspress book and have taken up examcram this week. Examcram definitely looks more interesting.

I have thought about transcender but looks a bit expensive right now. But I guess I will take the examcram tests in 2 weeks and if I do badly, buy transcender as the last option.

I think I am giving everything to this exam (my first exam for mcsd) and have 4.5 years of (developer) experience behind me... hoping for the best.

While others will try to use brain dumps i find that if the exam cram is good i will study from that then use transcender. If i score highly on transcender I am almost guarenteed a pass on the actual exam.

How can you say your scores? On the 70-300 it is pass/fail. No score is given!

Joe: The score is given right as it tells you if you pass or failed. I don't believe you get the score on the transcript. Who knows this could be different on different tests?

actually, i've taken the 70-300 twice now (failed it twice).. and i've gotten a score on both and even saying how well i did on different sections..

i got a 600, then a 666

# re: How to pass 70-300

Great post... Hope I'd read it before yesterday :s I felt very uncomfortable in the fashion this exam was designed besides I consider the time flies (3 use cases - 36 questions - 150 minutes). I had to go back and read some fragments of the use cases then return to the question and I lost plenty time doing that (writing the use cases' facts). I didn't go to the pub but the cinema instead and I thought a lot about it... (bloody exam... the first one I ever failed :'(

I'll pass it next time...

Thanks for the tips... I'll keep them on mind for the next time :D

Thanks for the tips. Passed on first attempt. The case studies in the Exam Cram book were the most helpful. Aslo helped that I had been analyzing requirements and writing specs for a couple years. Forget the MS Press book, it was useless.

I passed 70-315, 70-316, 70-320, 70-229 but I am not a professional developer and my experience is limited. I am more like a writer who creates tools in a software company.

My question is, do you think it's possible to pass 70-300 without architectual experience. I've failed the test already. I got about 630.

# re: How to pass 70-300

I just passed 70-300. I read many books for preparation, but the best help seems to have been Transcender. I also tried MeasureUp but I don't recommend it. Transcender is closer to the real test and has better explanations for the questions. You may be able to find new Transcender cheaper than the Transcender site if you go to ebay. I confirmed that Transcender cannot be shared.

Jason's suggestions on the exam preparation strategy really helped. However, I have a different opinion on the exam taking strategy on the exam day. I think it's better to read all the text very carefully and start taking a look at the questions. If you understand the contents in the case study well, you can probably answer many of the questions in 10 - 30 seconds. If you read the questions first, you may be using that 10 - 30 seconds and using your memory to remember those questions. This is not necessary.

With 12 hours before my test I am realizing I should have read this post a long long time ago. Looks like I will be doing all 7 steps; except I now will add step 0.5 Lots of Prayer

Not to disappoint, failed it with 634. I will take your advise and actually read the books. This is the first test I failed and I guess I was getting too cocky; I've been put in my place.

It sucks not knowing what questions I missed so I know where to study. At the end of my last couple exams it told me the areas of the test and how I did but this one just said FAIL - bastard. I have more respect for the cert now.

Congrats to all of you who have passed. Hopefully I will be in the club soon too.

# re: How to pass 70-300

dwg, I totally agree that it's very frustrating not to know where mistakes were made. In the previous exams, I could guess where I got it wrong by looking at the bar chart.

If you buy Transcender, you'll probably know where you made mistakes. By the way, I don't work for Transcender. :)

# re: How to pass 70-300

Wow. That is all I had to say when I walked away from this test. It is much harder than XML Web Services was (XML was more black and white). My perspective comes like this: 70-306, 70-305, and 70-310 (these are the VB.NET tests) with a 905, 950, and 874 respectively. I prepared for this test the same way as the others, but I also got a little cocky and tried to go back in within 2 weeks. I don't believe I adequately prepared although I studied like a HORSE! I was way too cocky because a friend of mine said he just stepped in to take it to see what it was like and passed. He failed the XML the first time and I beat the hell out of it, so I thought, "Ah, what the heck!" I got my rear handed back to me with a 601.

I just passed this exam with a score of 868. This is certainly a tough exam and I feel that more than any reading, the experience in designing and architecting a solution really helps to pass this exam. This is the first Microsoft Certification exam I have taken. Though I am not having a lot of experience in Microsoft products, my experience and knowledge of software development cycle was very helpful. I did go through the exam cram and it certainly helped me. I also bought a preparation test engine (Measureup.com) as suggested in Microsoft's website. I do have certifications in Java and OOAD from IBM but this was certainly the toughest one.

# re: How to pass 70-300

I just started preparing using the Exam Cram Book2. It seems that I do get lot of questions wrong at the end of the chapter. Hardest thing is that I have to go back and forth to find the answers in Case Study. How is it in exam? Do they have seperate window which shows case study where you can search on for words? Or is it on one page and you have to go to top to read for answers? Or they give printed copy of the case study text. I have passed 70-320 70-316 and 70-315 but this seems a tough one.

Can you folks let me know. Some great posts here. Thanks in adv for help.

# re: How to pass 70-300

I passed today with 835. I studied hard for this exam. I developed a different methodology compared to the above mentioned. For each test case I dividied the use case in 4 parts.
1. Current
2. Problems
3. Envisioned
4. Risks

Made 4 columns and put down the appropriate info in each column. It helped me more in organizing. Also compared to what folks are saying here, I read my use case thouroughly before attempting 1st question. Only 3-4 times in the whole exam I needed to refer back to Case Study. This worked out great. Regarding the study material

I used. Cram Book - 40% useful
Transcender - 20% useful
Test King v 13 - 40% useful - Note: Some Testking answers are wrong. I dont know which ones are though.

Well it is over now. Good luck to rest of you folks.

# re: How to pass 70-300

Hey Guys,

I took my 70-300 with Prometric testing center yesterday and I have an issue in this regard.

I was doing my "review" for the last case study and I ran out of time. A window opened up which said that I ran out of time and click OK to continue. I hit OK, nothing happened, I hit it twice ....nothing happened and the system hang up. Then I contacted the EDP's personnel who said that once she
logs off and logs in again everything should be fine and I would be able to see my score report and know whether I have passed or not.

But to my frustration, she was not able to pull out report and when she contacted the prometric representative over the phone...they told that the candidate needs to call them after 48 hrs. I work full-time and I cant spend
time on hold while waiting to talk to a prometric representative.

I am very frustrated and unhappy with the way microsoft delivers its testing packages which behave in such a poor manner. How can you expect a candidate to wait for days without informing him whether he has passed or not.

How can I voice my concern directly to Microsoft. I think I have done the exam well and I dont want to spend another 10-15 days preparing for the exam.

Thanks!!!

P.S: I would be posting my experience once I knnow the result

# re: How to pass 70-300

Just finished 70-300 with 900+ score (first try); To me it was the easiest exam of the MCSD.NET required exams. Took me 3 days to prepare with only the Microsoft book.

DB modeling questions were super simple. If all problems you encounter in real (software dev) life were as simple as the case studies in the exam, that would really be a nice job:-)

In my eyes: If you miss this one, yu really should think about whether you are the right person to take this exam (or whether you have chosen the right profession:-))

# re: How to pass 70-300

>In my eyes: If you miss this one, yu really should think about whether you are the right person to take this exam (or whether you have chosen the right profession:-))

I also find these types of exams easy. I breazed through both 70-100 a few years ago and 70-300 recently with scores above 90%.

It seems to me that some people have an educational background that is heavily based in the technology as opposed to design. Most people I work with have Hons in computer science and not one of them can produce a simple entity relationship diagram. Thus they struggle with exams such as this one.

Design was the biggest part of my Diploma course and that experience makes this type of exam very simple. Even the entity relationship diagrams int he exam are much simpler than those we did in my diploma course at college where we used DFDs and SDCs.

# re: How to pass 70-300

I passed (2nd go around). Thanks for the blog - it really helped!

Missed by one on the first go around. Read this blog and bought Exam Cram2. Evidently it helped. I also spent quite a bit of time in MSDN and google looking up stuff I did not know enough about referenced in the practice tests. The MS book is almost worthless; I think they purposely do not cover the whole topic. Unfortunately you need it for the MSF roles and stages stuff.

For the price Exam Cram is a good deal, but really you also need questions in the right format. I used Self Test Software, which was OK. It did me real well on the earlier ones.

# re: How to pass 70-300

This post is really interesting... I, too, am preparing for this exam - and I've found that I actually have to take a few steps backward. Their ORM is extremely sad, and if any of you know what ORM is, you'll know that you actually need to make the database worse to meet the exam requirements. I'm studying under Terry Halpin directly (he's the one that formalized ORM), and I've found so far on the Transcenders that I literally have to dumb the database questions down. It will be interesting to see what the real exam is like.

And DotNetJeff, I'm not aware of any of the new MCPD certs being out yet. The betas come out February 13th - and I'd be there, except that it's my anniversary. MCADs/MCSDs will be given free promo codes to try toward passing these tests, which will count as full certification. Again in my experience, however, the betas are usually much harder than the exams that come out eventually.

# re: How to pass 70-300

I failed the 70-300 the first time I took it with a 667. Like some of the others here, I got a little cocky since I had passed every MCSE and MCSD exam I ever took. This one really requires a different mindset. You can't just start solving the problems immediately- you really have to go through the analysis that Microsoft recommends. I skimmed the Exam Cram 2 book and took the Transcender practice tests. That wasn't enough for me. Now, I'm spending a lot of time at MSDN because I realized that, although I understand all the concepts, I don't know the Microsoft vocabulary and the connotations that certain terms have to Microsoft.

I like the idea of reading the questions first, I will definitely try that next. I am also considering trying to have pre-identified categories of notes because the requirements in the case study come at you in a very disorganized way. For each case study, I will have: logical diagram, physical diagram, erd, stated requirements (security, performance, scalability, etc.) Depending on the questions, I may focus more on some categories than others. I know you cannot spend too much time taking notes, and these note categories may need adjusting, but knowing where I am going to put each bit of information as I read it will, hopefully, help me be a little better organized. Comments?

# re: How to pass 70-300

Failed the 70-300 last saturday with 670 or so. Can't tell you the exact score as the program jammed afterwards and I did not receive the printout.

This is my last exam to become MCSD and I have passed 70-305, 70-310, 70-316, 70-306, 70-228 and 70-229 over the last 3 years. This is really the hardest one to me.

The 70-228 was also quite frustrating as the MSPress book did not cover all the points examined in the test.

The MSPress study guide for 70-300 is quite useless also, but the MeasureUp is much better, though there are still questions in the test which are not covered by either.

I hope to pass it this Saturday, although I have no idea which parts I failed. Perhaps a banana will indeed help for 30 extra points :)

Hi,

i'm preparing for this exam. I have the microsoft press book (which seems to be poor) and i have selftestsoftware test. Is the selfTestSoftware test enough to pass or should i buy an other one too??

Thanks

Finally,

I've passed this exam with a score of 967. The exam contained 35 questions. I've studied hard for it, after i've read this forum.

To achieve this scores i have :
1-read th ms press book. (which is good for general purpose, not enough technical)
2-bought the selftestsoftware 70-300 exam. (I also called directly selftestsoftware and YES this company is the same as Transcender. BUT Transcender, according to the technical support, is slightly better. The advantages of selftestsoftware is that prepared exams are cheaper)
3-bought the actualtests.com 70-300 test too.
WARNING: this actualtest is full of mistakes, and misses a lot of explainations. BUT, its questions are almost THE SAME as the real exam. So when you encounter weird explanations or responses with A,B,C,D,E,F (all responses are good)ask yourself questions and verify.
In my case, as you can see, i had a pretty good score.
4-Studied about 45 hours. (not including the book reading)

If i had to change something i would have only:
read the book, and buy the actualtest exam.

Good luck to everyone.

Great tips.....looking forward to my 70-300 tomorrow...so far I've read both MS Press study guide and Exam Cram book. Also tried 2 of the 3 transcender tests...failed both times....once with 57% and the second time with 63%. Hope this goes well in the 3rd and in the test tomorrow.

Passed 70-300 with 86%.....Transcender really helped.

I tried to follow the advice of glancing at questions first and after clicking through 4-5 questions found that there is no "Previous" option go back to pervious question. Got frustrated and decided to do my best on the rest.

What a surprise! At the end of case study section I found review option and could go back to any qestion. So don't despair if this happens with you.

I would also say it's a good idea to ready thrrugh the instructions, just in case...

# re: How to pass 70-300

My teacher at new horizons said to me not to worry about the 70-300. "It'll be a weird exam but easy (so I've heard)" He said. Seems he was wrong anyway.
Failed twice on 70-300 (score 650 and 667), and was frustrated and a bit shamed about it since I passed forms, web and xml on the first attempt.

The first time I was struggling with the available time, and the gathering of the right information from the case study.
After I failed the first time, my teacher told me to plan the next exam as soon as possible because I now knew what to expect from the exam. There he was right but it didn't really help much on my second attempt.

so now I will try the transcender tests and do a lot of googling.
I like the idea of first reading the questions before diving into the case study.
But why not combine it with the idea of then writing down important information while reading.

Since I havn't passed 70-300 yet, i will not give you tips on what to do, but I can tell what NOT to do.

Here are my tips:
1. Read the MS press book and see for yourself it is of little use.
2. Same problem with the www.ictwebtv.com video's. Very time consuming and not very helpfull.
3. Don't think you're the best developer in the world because you've passed all other exams on the first attempt. This exam is very different and tricky.
4. Keep your eye at the clock at all times... Time flies when you're having fun ;)

I will let you guys (and gals) know if i passed the next attempt.

I did pass this exam with the help of the EXAM CRAM book back when I took the test. It was three months after I took it and failed the first time (passed in March 2005). I even worked in the SQL SERVER 2000 test before I retook this one.

# re: How to pass 70-300

Im an MCAD, currently studying for the 70-300 exam, and just like the fellow exam takers, I do find this exam quite different to the rest.
One of the toughest challenges I faced in doing microsoft exams for MCAD is my lack of experience. Im a recent graduate, and only have about 2 yrs overall s/w development experience, and just 6 months experience in .NET development.
In studying for 70-300 exam, my low experience level is again becoming a big challenge, far more than the technical exams I have done.
I agree that the Microsoft press book is only a good reference book about MSF, but it doesnt contribute much to the exam.
What Id like to know is,
a) Is it a good practice to start creating Use Case diagrams, ER diagrams and Network diagrams while you are reading the case study, or will it be a waste of valuable exam time ?

b)What kind of information would it be useful to jot down when you are reading the case study ?

c) Any valuable advice from the more experienced professionals out there who have done the 70-300 exam, to someone like me who is lacking in work experience, yet wants to take the challenge of passing 70-300 ?

The microsoft patterns and practices website, seems to have a lot of resources which are related to the 70-300 exam - for eg: application architecture, services, components, deployment etc..
This is one such article : http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms954595.aspx
Im sure there are lots of others too... I just thought it might be useful for 70-300 exam takers...
Good luck !

# re: How to pass 70-300

Thanks Jason for the advice and everybody else for their feedback.

Passed 70-300 first time this morning with a score of 934 and wouldn't even have come close without the information here.

I used the following resources:

MS Press book - absolute rubbish, don't waste your money.

Que Exam Cram book - relatively short and worth a read... if you get a book for this one, the exam cram should be the one.

Measure-up practice tests - OK, I don't think I would have passed on these alone... the test engine was exactly the same as the one in the real exam, but if you are going for one practice test lot... get Transcender.

Transcender practice tests - Definitely worth the price.... case studies were very similar to the actual exam and the questions and answers explained everything you need to get through the exam.

Ultimately, I think you could get through the exam by really studying the Transcender practice questions and answers, but would advise using the Que exam cram book as well.

Good luck to anybody else taking this exam.

Also, Jason, you haven't got a similar post for the upgrade exams 70-553 and 70-554 have you? Looks like they will be my next goal now.

I would also add that database schema design is a must for this one.... how the entities described in the case study would be created a db tables (i.e. the foreign keys, how relationships map... many to many tables etc). Also brush up on where and why you would have indexes to speed up queries with joins in them and why and how you would denormalise a table to reduce the number of tables and joins a table would require.
